FAQ's for Discovery Model 390, 391, 534, 552

Q. What is wrong with the Discovery?

Recent laboratory tests conducted by Evenflo and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that this car seat could potentially become separated from its base in high impact side collisions similar to those in the tests. As a precautionary measure, Evenflo is providing current owners of these models with a free supplemental dual-hook fastener to reinforce the connection of the seat to its base. As confirmed by additional testing, proper use of this device will enhance the protection that the seat would provide to your child in the event of a high impact collision.

Please be assured that all Discovery Model 390, 391,534, 552 car seats consistently meet or exceed existing government safety standards and they have proven to be safe and effective in reported automobile accidents involving side impact collisions.

Q. Why has Evenflo undertaken this safety recall?

A. While our current Discovery car seat models have performed well to protect infants in actual side impact automobile collisions without any reports of serious injury or death since they were introduced, Evenflo wants to take further steps to protect the safety of children who use our products. Lab tests do show there is potential for the base to detach from the seat in high impact side collisions, so as a precautionary measure we are recommending that all Discovery owners use a supplemental dual-hook fastener to reinforce the attachment of the seat to its base.

Q. How does the company know this supplement dual-hook fastener works?

A. Evenflo has tested the supplemental dual-hook fastener and it has proven to be effective at preventing a potential detachment of the seat from the base in a high impact, side collision.

Q. If I do not use the supplemental dual-hook fastener is my seat still safe?

A. Your Discovery child restraint seat is safe, however, the supplemental dual-hook fastener provides added protection in high impact side collisions and we recommend that you use it. The Discovery consistently meets or exceeds existing government safety standards and has proven to be safe and effective in reported automobile accidents involving side impact collisions. The United States has not yet adopted a side impact standard for child restraints.

Q. Am I able to safely use Discovery without the base?

A. If you choose to install the car seat using vehicle’s seat belt without the base, you can continue to do so. Testing by Evenflo and NHTSA has shown that this installation method is safe and effective.

Q. Does this affect any other Evenflo infant carriers?

A. This safety recall relates only to Discovery models. Our other infant carrier that has a base installation system, the Embrace, meets all current government safety standards and has shown to be safe and effective in testing by NHTSA and Evenflo and in real world incidents.

Q. How can I obtain the supplement dual-hook fastener?

A. If you own a Discovery model 390, 391, 534, 552 we recommend that you request and use the supplemental dual-hook fastener. It is available free of charge by contacting our U.S. based customer services representatives at 1-800-356-2229 between 8 AM and 5 PM EST or by visiting our website at www.evenflo.com/Discovery.
